"It was the year Barack Obama took office, Britain entered recession, MPs' expenses were exposed to public scrutiny, Iranians protested after a flawed presidential election, Michael Jackson died and the Copenhagen climate summit ended in recriminations and a flawed deal"
BREIF: Quickly create a way to review 2009 and the decade
ANALYSIS: Alastair Dant and I decided on a grid of 365 thumbnail, each representing a news story which was featured in The Guardian in 2009. We realised that fitting 365 images into the small space we had was going to be slightly problematic.
Built on a grid system, every thumbnail and larger image is a percentage of that grid. As well as the size, position is also relative to the gird. Months are defined by colour so, at a glance it can be easily followed. This especially works well in the full screen mode, which looks amazing.
However, if I were to do this project again, I would still go down the grid path, but would state that more development time is crucial as we lacked time to refine the design and navigation.
